Issue Five
Ask the Brewmaster
Q: Is Bayern beer cold filtered?
A: Yes, but I prefer to say microfiltration. Cold filtered is a word out of the advertising language. No brewer in the world filters beer warm. Microfiltration (cold filtering) refers to a method of keeping beer fresh longer, without pasteurizing it.
Q: What do you do with your leftover barley?
A: We call the remains of the brewing process "spent grains" and we sell it to farmers who feed it to their hogs and cows. The "spent grains" still contain a lot of nutrients and protein which makes for great animal feed. I also sell some, occasionally, to people who use it for their gardens as great compost.
